Beyond Words: Embodied Pathways for Connection in Groups

Nonverbal communication is often the most immediate and powerful form of group interaction. What happens when we consider these communications as active participants in group psychotherapy? Together, we will consider interaffectivity—the reciprocal resonance of bodies in groups — as a powerful resource for deepening therapeutic cohesion and uncovering implicit dynamics. Drawing from principles of dance/movement therapy, we will identify strategies to attune to the body in the room (through metaphor, gesture, and posture) and apply these insights to strengthen therapeutic interventions.

Translating Embodiment: The role of Linguistic Mediation in DMT Training

The increasing globalization of dance/movement therapy (DMT) training presents unique challenges and opportunities in cross-cultural and bilingual teaching contexts. This presentation explores the role of linguistic mediation—the facilitation of communication across languages and cultural contexts—in shaping the embodiment of immediacy in DMT skills courses. Drawing on findings from a heuristic study, we examine how real-time translation, such as English-to-non-English interpretation, influences instructors’ ability to model immediacy and students’ embodiment of core DMT competencies. Participants will engage in discussions on the intersection of language, culture, and movement-based pedagogy, gaining insights into fostering immediacy in multilingual settings.

Theory and Practice of Dance/Movement Therapy–Advanced Applications of Chace Technique

This course will address advanced aspects of Chace technique in dance therapy sessions. Students will deepen their learning of Chace’s approach to integrating body action, symbolism, kinesthetic empathy, and rhythmic group activity to foster expression and communication in dance therapy groups.  The course will address cognitive/verbal aspects and timing, including how and when to mirror and/or return verbal comments as a therapist, and how and when to use movement improvisation to foster a different experience of the body/self.
